Lesson 5/Worksheet 4 - RAISING SOCIAL AWARENESS Big Ideas: Can Photography Create Social Change? How Does Art Foster Awareness About Global Issues? Do artists have a role in reflecting and commenting on the society in which they live? What are some issues that our community/school/nations/world is currently confronting?
We will be examining and discussing how art can be a powerful tool for raising social awareness that may be politically and socially sensitive to discuss. You will explore how art can open up discourse, challenge the status quo, explore, and transform visual perception particularly in connection with the social issues in high school.

WHAT TO DO: 1. Choose your social issue in your everyday life that you would like to address. 2. 10 exposures needed for contact sheet 3. Choose 2 image out of the 10 exposures. 4. With the images create a 8.5 x 11 - 300 dpi image in photoshop. 5. Work in Adobe Photoshop to manipulate and clean up your image (For example: dodging and burning, high pass tool, dramatic black and white, channel mixer black and white etc... See your step by step tutorial sheet)
6. You may continue in Adobe photoshop to add text to your image. - use text to supplement your social issue - think about how words can add and create a clearer intent to your image - when you are finished editing in photoshop save file as a jpeg. (file/save as/jpeg) - submit file in google classroom.
7. Or you can use Adobe Indesign to add your text to your image. - create a new document, letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches. - place jpeg (8.5 x11 image) onto document (file/place) - use text to supplement your social issue - think about how words can add and create a clearer intent to your image - When completed export as a pdf file. (file/export/adobe pdf print/high quality print) - submit file in google classroom.
8. Rubric - Fill in and submit
We will use the following procedure: 1. Upload images to Photos - 10 exposures 2. Make a contact sheet and save it out as a pdf 3. Complete self evaluation sheet and submit contact sheet 4. Evaluation will be concerned with the number of frames that are properly focused, theme and design of text within image, exposure controlled, images that offer solutions to theme, composition and contact sheet quality.
