Finding the Beauty In the Mundane Due: Big Idea: How can I bring attention to the beauty of the mundane or everyday object through the use of a shallow depth of field? ASSIGNMENT -10 exposures and 3 edited jpeg.
First Peoples Principles of Learning • Learning is holistic, reflexive, reflective, experiential. • Learning involves patience and time.
What to do: Photograph a VARIETY of compositions in which you MINIMIZE your depth of field only focusing on the mundane or everyday objects you would like to highlight in your environment. By doing this, you will create a visual narrative by asking your viewer to examine those aspects of our world that tend to be ignored or taken for granted.
- Rules of Composition will be SO important in this lesson in order to create a dynamic image - use the shallow depth of field to create SIMPLICITY, and try to use rule of thirds, point of view, leading lines and framing where ever possible. - Try out lots of angles, be sure to be close to your subject and to leave lots of space behind your subject. - Auto-focus in your camera won't always give you the result you want, so in a case like this it is a good idea to switch to manual focus and adjust it yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zns1-h_o0dE
- Your contact sheet needs to show a variety of in focal areas;
Foreground focus - minimum of 5 images
Middle ground focus - minimum of 5 images
Background focus - minimum of 5 images
- Your contact sheet needs to show evidence of multitude attempts at solution
Technical - Work in aperture shooting mode, A or AV and make sure your f stop/number is low. - Your shutter speed MUST not go lower than 1/60 of a second and because your subject is not moving it does not need to be faster than 1\125. Compensate will ISO if needed but remember - when you increase your ISO you lose quality (grain).

Place your best 15 images on a contact sheet (3 column). Make sure to order - 3 Foreground focus, 3 Middle ground focus, 3 Background focus. List each of the 3 different focal areas on your rubric. E) Upload to Server in a folder named - firstnamelastnameL3
1. Contact sheet – 15 images - 3 columns, captions include - date, shutter speed, ISO and aperture - named, firstnamelastnameL3.pdf 2. - Contact Sheet with 3 edited jpegs - original with edited - 2 columns 3. 1. psd uploaded with your layers
Evaluation: 1. Exposure control 2. Choice of subject matter and use of multiple focal areas. 3. Correctly demonstrating an understanding of how to creativity minimize depth of field to create visual narrative. Evaluation will be concerned with the number of frames that are properly focused, exposure control, views of the subject and creative/inventive solutions to the problem.
Note: Students are responsible for confirming that work is submitted - this involves uploading completed digital files to the server, responding to self assessment and making sure the rubric is placed in the block drawer.
